Lovat and Construcciones Sando have recently signed a contract for the supply of a refurbished Lovat RME185SE series 20002 earth pressure balance TBM. The 4.7 m-diameter mixed face TBM will be used in the construction of the Coslada sewer tunnel in the suburbs of Madrid. This will be the TBM's third project, following successful drives in North America and more recently on the Olympic power lines in the Lower Lea valley near London. Superficial geology along the 3,650 m-long tunnel alignment consists of man-made fill underlain by quaternary sandy clayey deposits. Fragments of flint overlying tertiary deposits, comprised of highly plastic clays with silty sands and dispersed crystals of gypsum are also expected. At the tunnel horizon, geology along the first drive is expected to be gypsum, and the second drive consisting of clay, sandy clay and fractured gypsum. The TBM will be shipped from its current location to the jobsite in Spain, where it will be fully inspected prior to undergoing a complete refurbishment under Lovat supervision. Tunnelling is expected to commence in early 2008. Visit www.sando.net and www.lovat.com 40/07.

OHL will build in 30 months the main tunnel, which will consist of a rectangle connected to 12 secondary tunnels for entries, exits and public transport usage. Five entries are planned, with one more envisaged in the future, and five exits together with a branch for public transport. The main tunnel is 1.1 km in length, with 450 m-long sections on the longest sides of the rectangle, orientated to the north-south direction almost parallel to Paseo de la Castellana. They will carry three lanes and a merging lane while the two shortest sides of this rectangle road will accommodate a unique lane. In addition, a four-lane perpendicular carriageway will cross the distributor (two lanes per direction), with access to the car park. Drinking Water

Tunnelling start of the 7.6 km 5.5 m-diameter water tunnel to link the Talave and Cenajo dams delayed due to possible cancellation of phase 2 and because TBM to be used by Dragados still boring a tunnel in Italy. Limestone, marls and clay. Contract value of Ptas5.9 billion and time frame of 24 months. 50/01.Obstacles to the construction of 7.6 km-long 5.5 m-diameter Talave-Cenajo tunnel have been lifted, clearing the way for construction. A EUR37 million contract was awarded to Dragados at end-2001. A double shield TBM will be used. Excavation diameter is 5.2 m and inner diameter is 4.8 m. Segmental lining with six segments per ring. Spoil removal with a conveyor belt up to the rear of the back-up and then loading on muck cars. Visit www.dragados.com 21/04.Dragados won the contract to build the 7.6 km Talave-Cenajo water tunnel already four years ago but the project never really started, due to political and environmental problems. The project is typical of the so-called water war which has been causing friction between Castilla La Mancha and Murcia regions about the sharing of water resources. Visit www.dragados.comThe Ministry of environment has accepted the demands of the Castilla-La Mancha government to reduce the transport capacity of the Talave-Cenajo tunnel. The Ministry, the government of Castilla-La Mancha and the City of Hellín agreed in mid September to pursue the construction of the water transfer tunnel between the Talave and Cenajo reservoirs, in Albacete. The tunnel will transfer 10 cubic metres of water by second instead of 60 cu m/s planned in the initial project. The water is meant only for human consumption and not for irrigation, as previously envisaged. A few days before the agreement between the three administrations, the Castilla-La Mancha government ordered for the second time to hold up the preliminary works. These works had already been stopped by the Castilla-La Mancha executive in December 2004. In June 2005, it decided to lift the suspension and construction could resume. The revised project, recently submitted by Dragados for approval by the Ministry of environment, reduces the excavation diameter of the tunnel from 5.2 m to 4.04 and the lined diameter from 4.8 m to 3.5 m. Tunnelling is scheduled to start in 2006. The budget amounts to EUR42 million.Dragados will use a Robbins double-shield hard rock TBM to drive the tunnel. The tunnel will be lined with concrete rings, made up of four hexagonal segments instead of six as initially planned. The reinforced concrete segments will be produce by Drace, a Dragados subsidiary. The TBM has been used last time to drive the 5,373 m Piedilama tunnel in Italy, which forms part of the Piceno aqueduct, and before to bore the 10 km Pieve Vergonte hydroelectric project. Both were projects subcontracted to SELI. The first stretch of this tunnel will be driven by conventional means and then with the TBM driving upwards to connect with Contract 2.Contract 4 has been commissioned to Copcisa, Ferní¡ndez Constructor, AZVI and Constructora Hispí¡nica for €220.42 million. Times frames are four months for design, 18 months for assembly of the TBM and 58 months for construction. Contract 4 also starts in Viadangos and ends in Telledo. It comprises of the west tunnel starting on the Asturian side. It also includes the construction of cross galleries between the two bores. The two single-track Pajares tunnels, 25 km in length, will feature a minimum cross section of 52 square metres. E-mail dlh@gisa.es 16/04.It was initially planned to construct in open cut the subsection running from Sagrera-Meridiana to the exit shaft of the TBMs near the future high speed station in La Sagrera. Because of a planning clash between the construction of this subsection and the future high speed railway station, the project has been modified and will be TBM-driven. GISA has awarded the construction of this subsection, running from Onze de Setembre station to Sagrera-Meridiana to Dragados, Necso, Comsa, ACS and Sorigué for EUR89.8 million and a time frame to complete the job of 24 months. The contract also includes an extension to Line 4 from Santander to Sagrera TAV and Sagrera-Meridiana, with a 12 m-diameter tunnel and the new Line 4 station at Sagrera-Meridiana. The Sagrera TAV - Sagrera-Meridiana stretch of Line 4 will be used by Line 9 trains while the Onze de Setembre - Sagrera-Meridiana parallel section is used for spoil removal when work continues on Line 9 between Sagrera-Meridiana and Zona Universití ria. The new Line 4 section will be commissioned as Line 9 without being connected to La Pau, the current head of the line. Construction of both sections implies therefore that Lines 9 and 4 will run in parallel in separated tunnels between Sagrera TAV and Sagrera Meridiana. Sagrera-Meridiana will also be an interchange station between four metro lines (4, 9, 1 and 5) and the Renfe station.
